Mainstreet Shelbyville executive director, Brandy Coomes, announced the painting day for the upcoming community mural is scheduled for November 1st, 2014. The mural will be located on the walls of the future office of Mainstreet Shelbyville at 18 N. Harrison Street. “The mural will be a nice focal point as you are driving south into Downtown Shelbyville” stated Coomes. “We are really excited about the opportunities that visual public art brings to our residents and the chance for the community to participate in the painting of the mural is outstanding.” The mural will be painted by a “paint by number” process that is open to all members of the community. We invite everyone in the community to come out and help us paint the mural and take part in this unique opportunity.” The mural painting will take place beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until completion. The mural will have two worksites depending on the weather; the gym at the Salvation Army located at 136 E. Washington Street will be utilized as well as the mural site at 18 N. Harrison Street.
The mural has been a collaboration between Mainstreet Shelbyville, Big Car, Blue River Community Foundation, Shelby Arts Alliance, and Shelby Art Guild Association. “Mainstreet is very appreciative of receiving grant funds from the Blue River Community Foundation and from all of the input and time from local art groups to help us make this mural a reality.” “We are looking forward to a great project, we can’t wait to see everyone on painting day” said Coomes.
