Shelby County Community Mural Installed

The public gathered together on Saturday, November 1st, 2014 at the Salvation Army Gymnasium in Shelbyville to paint sections of the mural that had been outlined and numbered by Big Car out of Indianapolis. The design had been worked on for several months in partnership with the Mainstreet Organization.

The mural sections were placed on tables and sawhorses around the gym and cups of paint and paintbrushes were standing by. Each outlined section contained a number corresponding to a particular color which was also printed on the cups. This made it easy for artists of every age and skill level to participate.

Outside on the wall of the future Mainstreet building and former Jim’s Barbershop, preparations were made to receive the mural panels. The walls are located at the intersection of State Rd. 9 and E Franklin Street, one block North of the Public Square. A frame work of supports were attached to the walls and the wall was painted to extend the mural background once mounted.

There was a great turnout for the painting day. There was a wide cross section of the community represented. There were School Board members, Mainstreet Board members, young children, Seniors, and families all working side by side. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. It was truly a community effort.

On Sunday, the panels were mounted to the wall and touched up to bring the entire mural together. Work will continue on that corner to make a small public space that will include a reference key to identify the various components of the mural. The mural provides a wonderful gateway to downtown Shelbyville and will be enjoyed for years to come.

A big thank you is owed to the Salvation Army for providing the space for the project to take place. It truly would not have been possible without the use of their gymnasium. The proximity to the mounting location was perfect and the large enclosed are provided the perfect space to allow the community to work out of the very chilly temperatures that the day had in store.
