Some Christmas Season Advice

Lewis Creek Baptist Church logoBy Pastor Steven Wilson

Christmas is coming soon and for some this is “the most wonderful time of the year.” However, for many people, Christmas celebrations lead to depression. If that is true for you or for other Christians you know, here are some things to keep in mind.

When you are depressed…

1. Remember that you are not alone. God is always there for you. Hebrews 13:5 says, “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”

2. Remember too, that when you accepted Christ as your savior, you became one of God’s beloved children. John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”

3. If you have done things that need forgiving, remember that God still forgives. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” And I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

4. Try to look beyond the current situation and see God. Your current situation is only temporary. Even if you cannot see what God is doing, He IS at work in your life. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Take a few moments now to read the story about Peter walking on the water in Matthew 14:25-32. Notice that it is when Peter began to look at his circumstances that he began to sink. Keep focused on Jesus.)

5. Don’t forget to pray! Paul reminds all of us to “Pray without ceasing,” in I Thessalonians 5:17. Prayer is a valuable resource and is an important part of every Christian’s life. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

6. Here are some scripture references for you to look up.

— Psalms 6: 13; 18; 23; 25; 27; 31; 32; 34; 37; 38; 39; 40; 42; 43; 46; 51; 55; 57; 62; 63; 69; 71; 73; 77; 84; 86; 90; 91; 94; 95; 103; 104; 107; 110; 116; 118; 121; 123; 124; 130; 138; 139; 141; 142; 143; 146; 147.

— Proverbs 3:5-6

— Matthew 6:25-34; 7:7-11; 11:28; 14:25-32.

— Romans 8:1-14 (Isaiah 1:18)

— Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 2:8-10; Philippians 4:6-8, 19.

— Hebrews 7:25; 13:5.

7. Remember that God loves and cares for you and He is big enough to handle whatever you are dealing with now. Let Him help you. Peter says in I Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Depression is real. So is God. Celebrate God this Christmas.
