Cycling to a Healthier Shelby County

Bicycle ImageOn Tuesday, Oct. 16th, 2012, a seminar was held regarding Planning for a Bicycle-Friendly Community. I attended this seminar and recorded a video of my take on the seminar. Please take the time to view it, and maybe check out a few of the links below the video.

The 5 E-s of creating a bicycle friendly community were addressed by the seminar.

  1. Engineering
  2. Education
  3. Encouragement
  4. Enforcement
  5. Evaluation and Planning

In addition, 4 ways a community benefits were shown.

  1. Quality of Life
  2. Economic Development
  3. Environmental Benefit
  4. Health Benefit

One way a community can benefit is illustrated at this website .

More about the health benefits and statistics about health in Indiana can be found here .

Information and calculators used in community planning for bicycles can be found at the League of Illinois Bicyclists website .

More information about bicycle planning as well as information about becoming recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business, University, or Community can be found at the League of American Bicyclists website .

Please check out the resources and learn more about the many benefits to our community.

You can also join the Bike Trails Action Team of the Shelby County Aspiration Process which meets the first Wednesday of each month at 5pm at the Blue River Community Foundation Building at 54 West Broadway Street.
